sinusitis and security
Apr. 8th, 2005 03:38 pmIt's not allergies. It's not a cold. I woke up this morning to the inescapable fact that I have sinusitis. If I have ever not taken your sinus ailments seriously enough, I apologize. I'm really really sorry. Now I understand, really I do. My teeth wanted to jump out of my jaw. My eye felt like it was half way out of the socket. The state of rhode island was hiding in my ear. And my nose was blocked like the holland tunnel. BUT ONLY ON THE RIGHT SIDE.
I eventually scraped myself out of bed to get decongestant. To irrigate my nose. To drink water. Hot water. Loads of it.
And I do feel much better. Which mostly means that while my teeth & eye are back in place, I feel like a limp dishrag and Providence is still in my ear.
Ugh.
Thats what I get for being so late through security through heathrow that i had to run the 1/4 mile to the gate as they were closing it.
Which is also why the scene I saw at security didn't really register or percolate till about halfway through my flight home.
In retrospect, it was obviously a successful security probing. The girl I noticed as soon as I got in line. Fair & pasty british girl... in full-on muslim wardrobe. Not quite the right body language for it though. With a tallish middle-eastern guy. When they got to the security stand, they placed their articles on the conveyor and then went through the metal detector. Instead of waiting, he went in about a half-foot behind her. When the alarm went off, he spun on his heel and made to go back through the detector. No no, they moved him aside for wanding while she stood there waiting for him. He was clean, and they went on their way. At no point did they consider wanding the girl. Who could have had an entire artillery under those skirts.
Blanket security is pointless- because it's all we're doing. Long lines means that there is pressure to run people through, and all humans make mistakes. I resent standing in line for an hour for no reason- especially when it is trivially easy for a criminal to finesse the checkpoints.
In sum, people suck.
