impatience (after a beer)
Feb. 1st, 2008 05:28 pmThe moped rider was up and walking around before I got out of my car. He wasn't too coherent, though, so it seems likely that there was an awful lot of adrenaline fueling those perambulations. The other witness got him into his car, to try and warm him up, and we waited for emergency vehicles.
...
I felt bad. Still do. The moron in front of me, the guy who eventually ran over the moped rider, wanted to turn left but didn't move out into the intersection. I beeped at him once, about 5 seconds into the light, because I wanted/needed to get around to the right, which i couldn't do if he was just going to sit there. My horn has been flaking out, though, so I didn't beep at him any more, but I was certainly making impatient/annoyed noises to myself in my car.
I was only a block from home, you see. I'd gotten soaked enough walking to my car from class that I had *taken my skirt off in the parking lot*, because there was no way I was going to sit on 10lbs of soaking wet cotton for 45 minutes when I could just keep my damp but not soaking shorts on and turn the heat up. So, I was damp and cranky, and a block from home. And this moron wasn't moving. The light turned yellow, and I resigned myself to sitting through yet another light.
And then he *floored* it. And the moped rider did the same, except he was going straight. And everything happened very slowly, especially the arm going under the wheel, and the helmet flying, and the bike crunching.
I'd been out in the rain for 30 minutes, directing traffic, taking pictures, stomping through the flooded streets, completely unaware that I was only wearing shorts when the other witness looked at my bare thighs and steaming knee socks and said, "aren't you cold?"
I couldn't feel my toes when I finally got home.
I am going to the bar now. I will send good healing thoughts moped riders way. I expect there is more internal damage than just the arm, and I hope he survives.
