Nick and I spent saturday driving. First, out of the city and through Baltimore, up to Greg's, where we gorged on bagels and fish and bought more bagels and fish to take with us.
We left later than expected; we'd idled for a long while and then I decided I'd rather try to nab a ticket for shmoocon from home than from my iphone on the road. Early-bird ticket acquired, we left, and headed north.
Just after we merged on 95 from the beltway, traffic came to a near-abrupt halt. I tried to bring up traffic on the phone, and looked ahead. There were a bunch of cars off to the side of the road. 'Oh, it's an accident, we should be past it soon.'
Then I noticed the two wheels in the big grassy median. 'OH, crap, someone lost wheels.'
*Then* I finished looking over past the wheels, and saw the carnage on 95S. A car on its roof in the middle of the road. Someone collapsed against the guard rail, sobbing. A hand on their shoulder. The contents of possibly a moving truck, strewn across the road. Someone vainly trying to direct traffic around. A motorcyclist, motionless on his bike, looking somewhat in shock. A bigrig towtruck, with a rig off the end, seemingly the source of the wheels. And more cars on both sides of 95N, stopped with hazards on, people on cellphones staring at their cars, wandering around in bemusement.
It was clear that the truck dual wheels had shot across from 95S and struck vehicles heading northbound before coming to rest in the median. It was clear that if the motorcyclist had been hit by them, he would have likely been dead immediately, and he was probably still trying to figure out how the hell he was still alive. It wasn't clear what caused the car to end up on its roof, or how the wheels came off the truck. I can't find anything the accident, so it doesn't seem that anyone died. Still, I was glad that we hadn't been on 95 when it happened.
On the way back from Greg's (Scandinavian is my new favorite fish), I stopped Bob's to try on some gear and ended up getting some sale items. I will now be a brightly-colored target!
Then we drove out to St. Marys to have dinner with Nick's parents, and spend the night in the peace and tranquility of the country.
I saw more stars last night than I have in a long time.
